THE DICK

The Dick Institute features two Contemporary Art Galleries with a regularly changing programme of exhibitions, and upstairs there are large museum displays of Local and Industrial History, Fine Art and Natural Sciences. Featuring full disabled access, the Dick also houses a public library and reference library.

Main Gallery

On the ground floor is the contemporary art gallery, which features regular changing touring exhibitions. Reputed as the finest contemporary art gallery in the west coast of Scotland, this bright, fresh and airy modern space also plays host to many of the gallery talks and workshops which accompany many of the exhibitions.

Young Peoples Gallery

The Young People’s Gallery can be found on the ground floor and is a dedicated space for young people. This gallery is programmed by the young consultants – a group of young people who are interested in the visual arts and meet regularly to discuss the gallery programme.

Natural Sciences

North Museum Wing

If you’ve not already discovered the Natural Sciences Gallery, then make sure you pay us a visit soon!

Containing an array of animals, birds, rocks and fossils you’ll be impressed by our newlook displays. Everything on view is taken from our collections and we’ve also set aside some objects for you to touch and handle.

Thanks to recent refurbishments the upper floor of the Dick are fully accessible via the lift in the Young People’s Gallery or the main stairs.

Local History

South Museum

Take a look at the South Museum. You’ll find out about the history of East Ayrshire’s communities.

The industries your ancestors worked in, the clothes they wore, and the conditions they lived in. You’ll discover how their lives and achievements still affect you today.

The exhibitions also look at how communities within local towns and villages developed in the past. Amongst the unusual objects on display are the Kilmaurs Fire Engine dating from 1830, and the ancient and mysterious Soulis Cross - recently been renovated by museum staff.
