Jerwood Prize Winner
20/04/2009

Recently announced Jerwood prize winner Michael Visocchi is one of the artists currently displaying work as part of ‘Creative Burns’ at The Dick in Kilmarnock. The collaborative project with moving image artist Adam Proctor was one of the new works commissioned for the exhibition which forms part of East Ayrshire Council’s contribution to the Homecoming celebrations.

The short film ‘Repose’ the first collaboration for the pair, employs a variety of animation and live footage techniques and transports the viewer to Ellisland, a landscape in which Burns was immersed for a few years of his life. The viewer’s eye observes the rook on a journey through an imagined seasonal landscape. The film score features a composition for cello which follows the rythyms and tones of the piece.

Visocchi, who is based in Edinburgh, works primarily in Sculpture and it is for this that he has been recognised by the Jerwood Foundation. Visocchi has secured the £25,000 prize from the foundation which has a reputation for quality and innovation and seeks to encourage emerging talents in outdoor sculpture. Visocchi’s 18m ‘Yield’ will take its place in 2010 and is based on scaled down electric pylons placed one on top of the other. This monument to technology references climate change, the carbon footprint and renewable energy.

‘Creative Burns’ continues at the Dick Kilmarnock until 16th May Tues – Sat 11am – 5pm and is FREE.
